Description

Mexican Red Wood Turtles are one of the four subspecies of tropical wood turtles. These are largely terrestrial turtles – but are usually not far from water – which they enter readily. Found in the Pacific lowlands of Mexico, Guatemala and Nicaragua, this beautiful species is facing serious threats from both habitat destruction and road kills as land is developed and new roads are put in…

Their shells can be many shades of brown, with large yellow or red circular patterns. Their plastrons (bellies) are yellow/gold with black and red markings, and their vividly colored skin looks almost as if it were painted on them by a makeup artist…

Mexican Red Wood Turtles are highly intelligent, and make outstanding pets. True omnivores, they favor fruits and veggies, but will also eat worms, insects, snails and other protein foods. Mexican Red Wood Turtles come in a wide range of colors – but all have the same “painted” limbs and faces; and all have distinct personalities that make their keepers smile over and over again…
