Midland Painted Turtle

Captive Born Midland Painted Turtles are so infrequently available that we don’t often see them. One of the prettiest of the painted turtles, they are found from southern Ontario through the central states east of the Mississippi River as far south as Tennessee and Alabama. Their carapace (top shell) has distinct patterns around the edge, sometimes with red coloration. Their plastron (bottom shell) is a yellow/orange with a variable dark pattern/shape in the center. Similar to Eastern and Western Painted Turtles in some ways, Midland Painted Turtles remain distinctly different over all.

Although harder to find, Midland painted turtles, also make fine beginner and intermediate tank turtles. They also thrive in larger community set ups. Just like other painted turtles, the colors of Midland Painted Turtles improves as they grow. Once over 4 inches they also make very beautiful additions to outdoor ponds.
